Sebelum membaca resensi ini, saya menyarankan anda sudah membaca buku pertama dari serial Mortal Instrumen ini, karena jika anda belum membaca, maka beberapa hal dari resensi ini akan menjadi spoiler untuk buku pertama. WARNING!!!! JANGAN LANJUT MEMBACA JIKA BELUM BACA BUKU #1!!!!

Kita kembali lagi ke lika liku petualangan Clarrisa “Clary” Fray yang memiliki nama asli Clarissa “Clary” Morgestern.  Ya..nama belakang Clary adalah Morgestern karena ternyata dia adalah putri Valentine (fakta dari buku pertama). Kenyataan itu membuat hidup Clary menjadi berbeda. Dalam waktu singkat ia harus menerima Valentine sebagai ayah kandungnya, seorang pembunuh yang menculik ibunya, dan telah menyengsarakan banyak kaum pemburu bayangan. Clary juga harus menerima kenyataan bahwa ia telah jatuh cinta kepada Jace Wayland yang ternyata adalah kakak kandungnya sendiri. Kisah cinta terlarang itu sungguh memilukan, membuat saya sendiri hampir tidak bisa melanjutkan kisah yang diungkapkan Cassandra Clare ini. Clary akhirnya tahu bahwa Luke tidak pernah mengkhianati dia dan ibunya. Luke adalah manusia serigala yang selama ini menemani Clary dan Jocelyn, dan membantu Jocelyn melindungi Clary dari dunia bayangan. Singkat cerita, di akhir petualangan buku pertama, Valentine berhasil membawa Jace dan piala mortal bersama. Namun, Clary dan Luke serta sekawanan serigala, berhasil melacak keberadaan Valentine. Dengan penuh kasih sayang, Clary berhasil menyadarkan Jace, bahwa Valentine, ayah mereka berdua, tidak lebih dari seorang pembunuh yang telah menyengsarakan semua orang. Walaupun terjadi pertumpahan darah antara prajurit Valentine dan kawanan serigala yang dipimpin oleh Luke, namun Clary berhasil membawa Jace dan ibunya kembali. Sayangnya, Jocelyn tidak pernah sadarkan diri, ia seperti tersihir masuk kedalam alam mimpi dan Clary harus menepis keinginannya untuk bersama Jace karena mereka adalah saudara kandung.

Kisah buku kedua ini kembali disuguhkan dengan sudut pandang orang ketiga, namun sebagai besar cerita dikisahkan dari sisi Clary sendiri. City of Ashes berawal ketika Valentine menyewa seorang warlock untuk memanggil iblis Agramon, iblis yang merepresentasikan ketakutan terdalam seseorang yang seketika itu juga membunuh sang warlock. Valentine mempunyai piala mortal yang membuatnya memegang kekuasaan terhadap setiap iblis yang mampu dipanggilnya.

Clary mulai menyesuaikan diri kembali dengan kehidupannya, ia berusaha untuk kembali hidup normal. Ia pindah tinggal bersama Luke, sedangkan ibunya masih terbaring koma di rumah sakit.

Jace mendapat kecaman hebat dari orang tua Alec dan Isabella yang selama ini membesarkannya. Mereka pun baru tahu bahwa Jace adalah putra Valentine. Kenyataan itu membuat Maryse Lightwood, ibunda Alec dan Isabella, mengusir Jace dari institut. Selama ini mereka berpikir telah membesarkan putra Michael Wayland, teman lama mereka yang terbunuh ketika melawan Valentine, namun mengetahui bahwa Jace adalah putra Valentine, menjadi pukulan berat bagi Maryse yang selama ini mencintai Jace seperti anaknya sendiri.

Inkuisitor adalah orang kepercayaan kunci yang berasal dari Idris. Ia datang ke Institut di New York untuk memeriksa orang-orang yang pernah terlibat dengan Valentine, dan Jace bukanlah pengecualian. Sang Inkuisitor menyerang Jace dengan tuduhan sebagai mata-mata Valentine dan menjebloskannya kedalam penjara di kota hening. Ketika berada di penjara bawah tanah kota hening, Jace mendengar teriakan-teriakan yang memekikan dari para “Saudara Hening”, tidak berselang lama untuk mengetahui Valentine-lah penyebab semua itu. Valentine datang ke kota hening untuk mencuri pedang jiwa, instrumen kedua dari mortal instrumen. Sementara Isabella yang cemas dengan keadaan Jace, meminta Clary dan Alec untuk bekerja sama membebaskan Jace. Mereka datang tepat pada waktunya saat Jace mulai sekarat di penjara itu. Sayangnya mereka tidak sempat merebut kembali pedang jiwa yang telah dicuri oleh Valentine. Dengan pedang jiwa, Valentine memiliki kekuasaan tak terbatas untuk memanggil semua iblis neraka dan menjadikan mereka pasukannya.

Ditengah semua kekesalan yang diciptakan oleh Valentine, suatu malam, Clary mendapati dirinya mencium Simon sahabatnya sendiri. Hubungan mereka perlahan-lahan meningkat dari sahabat menjadi teman kencan. Namun suatu hari, Ratu istana Seelie (dewi peri) memanggil Jace ke istananya. Jace pergi bersama Clary, Isabella, dan Simon. Di Istana itu, ratu menyihir Clary, ia tidak bisa meninggalkan istana kecuali ia mendapat sebuah ciuman yang sangat didambakannya. Kemarahan dan gelora membara di hati Jace, bagaimana mungkin ia harus mencium adiknya sendiri walaupun ia sangat ingin melakukannya. Namun tidak ada jalan keluar lain bagi Clary. Jace mencium Clary dengan lembut, namun perlahan-lahan menjadi gelora asrama yang membara diantara mereka sementara semua mata menatap mereka. Simon terbakar api cembur, hingga membawanya tanpa sadar ke dalam sarang vampir.

Peristiwa demi peristiwa semakin membingungkan di dalam kisah buku kedua ini. Apalagi ketika Clary mendapati Simon bersimbah darah oleh gigitan vampir. Akankah Simon berubah menjadi Vampir? Apakah Jace dan Clary bisa bersama? Bagaimana kekuataan yang dimunculkan oleh Valentine dengan pedang jiwa? Apakah Clary dan Jace mampu menghentikan kekacauan yang diciptakan oleh ayah mereka?

Awalnya saya pikir buku kedua ini akan menjadi membosankan, namun Cassandra Clare berhasil mengubah pendapat saya. Valentine berhasil bangkit dari kekalahannya di buku pertama dan mendapatkan jalan baru menuju kemenangannya. Namun, kejahatan Valentine justru membuka jalan bagi Clary dan Jace untuk memahami kekuatan terpendam di dalam mereka masing-masing. Saya tidak bisa berhenti membaca hingga halaman terakhir buku ini, bahkan sampai di halaman terakhir pun, saya tidak bisa berhenti untuk segera melanjutkan ke buku ketiga. Hey kamu Cassandra Clare...kamu berhasil membuat saya terpesona dengan imajinasimu.
